PRESS RELEASE FROM:

PROTECT OUR WOODLAND (POW!)

For Immediate Release.

In an exclusive interview, on the eve of the South Downs National Park Inquiry's evidence into the area around Titnore Lane, Ian Brooks secretary of radical group South Coast Against Roadbuilding (SCAR), talked frankly to John Clark of Protect Our Woodland about the looming confrontation if planners go ahead and approve the Titnore Lane road scheme.

Ian explained that already parts of the Lane have been identified suitable for occupation by a group of 'Swampies' experienced in tunneling and tree-climbing; tactics so effective in the sieges of Newbury and Twyford etc. Clearly if such a siege takes place along Titnore Lane, not only will the cost of the road works rocket, but so will the work load of the already over-stretched police. In the case of Newbury the siege there put an extra 35% on the cost of the road.

Looking on the bright side, Ian said that of the groups affiliated to SCAR, most where of the opinion that the road works and the associated development of the first phase of 850 houses etc wouldn't get past the councils planning executive stage. Adding, with such vocal local opposition it would be political suicide for any council to approve it.

[South Coast Against Roadbuilding (SCAR) was formed in 1994, as an umbrella group to local groups fighting the threat of more road building. Many of their groups support non-violent direct action and were at Twyford Down, Newbury and the A30. Their website address is: www.scar-uk.co.uk ]
