PRESS RELEASE FROM:
PROTECT OUR WOODLAND (POW!)
For Immediate
Release.
GROUP CALLS FOR REFERENDUM.
It was clear, judging by the
emotion shown at the Public Meeting held
outside the so called exhibition,
that was organised by the council on
Saturday, September 13, that the
proposed Titnore Lane / West Durrington
Development is opposed by local
residents. Residents over-came their fear
of open air public speaking to
voice their concerns on the effect such a
large development would have on a
wide range of topics, including: the
already inadequate infrastructure, over
stretched medical services and
shops, high social unrest, not mention the
desecration such a development
would do to the cherished
countryside.
For POW! John Clark said: "Yes the meeting was noisy, but
isn't that
understandable when we have a council that won't listen to the
residents -
the taxpayers, in fact the voters who elected them to represent
their views.
I'm surprised residents were able to control themselves
when faced with
a councillor sent to answer questions, who was not even a
Durrington ward
councillor where the development is planed, and then couldn't
or wouldn't
answer them. What a farce!".
Continuing John Clark said:
"The thing that seemed to be repeated over and
over again by council staff,
was that the council were being forced into
accepting the new Greenfield
housing by Government. Yet it seems the council
haven't even lifted one
finger to object, that despite the fact that
government have abandoned plans
for bypasses etc on the A27 to cope with
the extra traffic new housing would
generate. It makes you think that the
council want the housing and the extra
council tax it would give them.
No, I'm now concerned for local
democracy. If it's true what the council
say, that government are forcing
them to accepting the housing, then let the
residents have a referendum on
the development. Clearly then, if the
development is rejected by the people
in a truly democratic process, it
lets the council off any possible
government action. Also of course, by
agreeing to hold a democratic
referendum, it clears the council of
any
accusations".
