Protect
Our Woodland! (POW!) - the local campaign to protect unique ancient woodland
and important ecology in the Titnore Lane area of Durrington near
Worthing, West Sussex - is pleased to announce that Dr Caroline Lucas M.E.P
for South East England presented to the Mayor of Worthing a petition on
behalf of concerned local residents and members of environmental groups.
The petition which containing many thousands of local names and addresses was handed to the Mayor on the steps of Worthing Town Hall, Chapel Road at 4pm,
Thursday September 19th 2002.
POW!
spokesman John Clark said: "Although only formed
in January of this year, by a group of Durrington residents concerned by
the threat of a housing development damaging a local unique greenfield
site, POW! has captured the mood of environmentalists up and down the
country also concerned over the land grab in their locality.
In
what may turn out to be democracy on trial, people who have lived in the
Durrington area all their lives are determined that their views will not be
ignored".
Finally
John Clark added: "By presenting this petition we hope those who make
decisions will take note that we want local democracy to work. However if this
fails and development is approved for this nationally listed site,
massive civil disobedience can be expected. Make no mistake, the demonstration

which closed Titnore Lane (a busy 'A' road) for many hours, was a test of
local support. If, as seems likely, Durrington becomes a land grab test
case, then those in other parts of the country facing similar issues will
join as in solidarity for the mother of all local demonstrations".
