Titnore Lane Hots Up.

Despite other major attractions such as the Shoreham Air Display, nearly 100 local residents attended our open air public meeting at Northbrook Park Durrington to voice their anger over deputy prime minister John Prescott’s refusal to hold a public inquiry into the controversial West Durrington / Titnore Lane Development plan.

To loud applause, notable speakers that including Chris Hare, former West Sussex County Councillor and vice chair of the planning committee, Dr Tony Whitbread, Conservation Director of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, David Sawers, Chair of the Forum of Arun District Amenity Groups, David Sumner, Chair of The Worthing Society and Dick Waller, Chair of The Goring Residents Society and The Ilex Group all gave talks seriously critical of the governments housing, environmental, and transport policy’s.

In particular DPM John Prescott came in for a sustained attack, with his house build figures described as lunacy and likely to cause traffic chaos and social unrest.

John Clark from organisers Protect Our Woodland said: “The strength of feeling against the Titnore area plans is definitely hardening and getting national, and we hear now, international publicity. Whilst John Prescott’s refusal to hold an inquiry was condemned, Worthing Borough Council didn’t escape the fury of the meeting either, with several of the audience referring to their leadership of the community as lamentable and not worthy of even one vote.

The climax of the meeting came as one speaker suggested that, as maybe John Prescott had never seen an ancient wood, the effigy - one entered in a competition for the best effigy of John Prescott - should be taken to the woods. The event that took place some distance along Titnore lane and well into the woods was described by one eye witness as out of this world, saying: ‘it seemed as if the effigy came to life and over-come by a spirit from the woods, it fell to the ground with smoke poring from it’s mouth, then flames reduced it to a smouldering heap’. Clearly the events of Sunday, 4 September 2005 and all filmed for a forthcoming edition of the ITV programme ‘Tonight with Trevor McDonald’ will make the DPM realise Titnore lane is much more than a little local irritation”.
