26 August 2008 Update. The documents for the revised application are now available Here but as of 7pm tonight not at the central library as published

Cockup or Conspiracy?

That's what campaigners fighting to save the cherished Titnore Lane area west of Worthing in West Sussex are pondering today?

This follows the announcement by Worthing Borough Council that the consortium who are planning to build a massive new housing and utility building complex on the Greenfield site have submitted a revised application. In that announcement the council, who in the past agreed to allow building, joyously stated that the revised application would see 200 trees saved and 2,350 new trees planted. They also stated all the revised documents and plans are available at council buildings and on their website. We also noted that the deadline for comments is 9 October 2008.

However despite stating on the links to the documents that they were ‘updated’ 20.8.2008 examination in the text of them revealed they were way out of date having been written / drawn between 2003 and 2006.

In a statement to the press our John Clark said:

"Unfortunately Worthing Borough Council have failed to back up their Greenwash announcement with the revised application documents. Even 4 day’s after the announcement was made only documents 4 years out of date were available even on their website(2), although there was a note stating ‘documents to follow’.

However what we do know is that Titnore Lane is planned to carry the bulk of rush hour traffic to and from buildings on the planned development, and to us that is a recipe for chaos. Anyone who uses the lane at peak times knows it only just copes now, just imagine what it will be like with the predicted extra 300 vehicles from the development and also those from the just started St Barnabas Hospice complex.

Clearly, despite what the council are saying, if this development goes ahead, and Titnore Lane is allowed too continue as a rat run between the A27 and A259, a massive widening of the lane is inevitable with the resultant loss of hundreds of irreplaceable trees, protected species and the destruction of a charming old English Lane so dear to many generations of Worthing folk. We therefore call on everyone who cherishes this area to object to this outrageous application in anyway they can before the deadline of 9 October 2008".

(2) On the link it did state the documents had been updated recently, but within the documents/maps they were dated between 2003 and 2006.
